No sector is impervious to the social and economic reforms of our time. The opera sector too has to deal with this new reality. Fewer productions and more co-productions are being made, production budgets are being cut down, ticket prices raised, staff made redundant, and so on. All those working in the opera world are faced with these developments. Including the singers. Vacant positions are expensive to fill. Even more will be demanded from the candidates, and selection by audition will be even more meticulous. In short, singers are expected to be even better and more completely prepared for their task.
Educational courses must not ignore this trend. With its up-to-date curriculum, the International Opera Academy gives a clear signal: the message has been understood. The task of this organisation is to prepare young singers even better for the complex job awaiting them in the profession.
IOA’s teachers have direct links with international professional practice and know from experience how to prepare their students for it.
The curriculum consists of many hours of coaching in the repertoire, language coaching and acting training. Further, attention is paid to musicology and dramaturgy (libretto and performance analysis). By means of targeted courses, students are intensively prepared for professional practice and the unavoidable auditions.
IOA is delighted with its cooperation with several major European opera houses: Kunsthuis Opera Vlaanderen (Antwerp & Ghent), la Monnaie/de Munt (Brussels), Aalto-Musiktheater (Essen, Germany), Opera de Oviedo (Spain) & de Nederlandse Reisopera (the Netherlands).
Mainly in the second year of our two-year course, time is made for internships and participation in productions and concerts with the abovementioned partners and other musical-theatre companies.
IOA invites performing artists who actually work with these companies to share their experience with our students. Further, we invite renowned performers to give master classes.
In addition to numerous projects and concerts in the course of the two years, the second year also involves a fully staged opera production with orchestra.
