LoveMusik is een ode aan de 20e-eeuwse componist Kurt Weill.
De Amerikaanse theatermaker en librettist Alfred Uhry baseerde LoveMusik voornamelijk op Weills muziek en op diens turbulente relatie met zangeres/actrice Lotte Lenya. Omwille van hun verschillende carrières moesten zij vaak reizen. Dat leverde een verzameling briefverkeer op. Deels op deze brieven, die aantonen hoe hun relatie precies in elkaar zat, baseerde Uhry de originele versie van LoveMusik. Het werd een productie in twee aktes, beginnend in Duitsland en eindigend in Amerika. Het werk ging in 2007 op Broadway in première.
Regisseur Stefaan Degand gaat in deze versie aan de slag met LoveMusik’s onderliggende thema van aantrekken en afstoten, de wispelturige dynamiek in de liefdesrelatie van Lenya en Weill. Een ander thema dat wordt uitgepuurd – onder andere in het scènebeeld – gaat over de innerlijke onrust van personages die vooral “onderweg zijn”.
Door de covid-19 pandemie konden de zangers van de IOA hun eindvoorstelling, hun showreel naar de wereld, niet voor publiek spelen. Opgelucht wisselen we dit jaar de cameraman in voor u, ‘de kijker’. De artiesten van de IOA en Casco Phil staan klaar om dit emotioneel, komisch en verrassend portret met een breed publiek te delen.

LoveMusik is an ode to the 20th-century composer Kurt Weill.
LoveMusik, composed by American theatre maker and librettist Alfred Uhry, is mainly based on Weill’s music and on his turbulent relationship with singer and actress Lotte Lenya. Because of their different careers, Weill and Lenya travelled a lot, which resulted in a collection of letters. The original version of LoveMusik is partly based on these letters, and shows the intricacies of their relationship. The composition is set in two acts, starting in Germany and ending in the USA. The work premiered on Broadway in 2007.
In this version, director Stefaan Degand examines LoveMusik’s underlying dynamics of attraction and rejection, the fickleness of Lenya and Weill’s relationship. The visual scene refers to another major theme: the inner torment of these restless, travelling characters.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the IOA singers were unable to perform their final production for a live audience. We’re relieved to exchange last year’s cameraman for you, ‘the viewer’, this time around. The IOA artists and Casco Phil are ready to share this emotional, funny and surprising portrait with a larger audience.
